Making strides in his second full-time Supercars season, Cameron Waters is looking to up the ante to become a regular contender in 2018, his third under the Monster Energy Racing banner.
In his sophomore campaign, the 23-year old achieved several personal goals he had heading into 2017. Starting from pole at Sandown and on Saturday in Auckland, the Mildura native notched his second and third career poles, won his first career race at the Sandown 500, and finished soundly in the top ten of the championship, with an eighth place finish.
His first full year in the Supercars season saw Waters awarded the Mike Kable Young-Gun Award after earning a pole position at Perth, and two fourth place finishes at two of the season’s largest events, the Clipsal 500 and Bathurst 1000.
Consistency and speed have become a focus for Waters in 2017 who now partners with experienced race engineer, Brad Wischusen.
At just 17 years-of-age Waters made history as the youngest ever driver to compete in the Bathurst 1000 in 2011, an opportunity gained by winning the Shannons Supercar Showdown television program.Waters also became the youngest driver ever to claim the Australian Formula Ford Championship in the same year.
In 2013 Waters completed his first full year of Dunlop Super2 racing with Minda Motorsport before moving to Tickford Racing in 2014, where he would replace now teammate Chaz Mostert in the team’s Super2 Falcon; the first step in the team’s driver development program.
He has since been groomed for stardom by the 2013 and 2014 Bathurst winning team, finishing second overall in the 2014 Dunlop Series Championship before taking home the series trophy in 2015 after a standout year.
After just one year in the development series, Waters received the call up to race alongside Jack Perkins in the 2014 Enduro Cup, were the pair would eventually finish 12th overall in the Bathurst 1000.
His efforts were quickly recognised by team boss Tim Edwards, when it was decided he would accompany 2014 Bathurst champion Chaz Mostert in the number #6 Ford for his 2015 Pirtek Endurance Cup campaign.
Mostert’s horrifying crash in Friday’s practice at the Bathurst 1000 meant Cam did not compete in the 2015 Great Race, but was elevated to the main driver role for Car 6 for the Gold Coast 600, where he would be accompanied by Supercars veteran Russell Ingall.
Waters was also given the opportunity to pilot car #6 for the Auckland and Phillip Island events before returning to his Super2 Falcon to fight for, and eventually win his maiden title at Homebush, Sydney.
After two years competing in the Dunlop Super2 Series, and two full years with Tickford Racing, Waters made the move to the main series for the 2016 season to fill the remaining full-time seat within the Tickford Racing line-up.
